Un communiqué du Président des Artisans Bâtisseurs en Pierre Sèche
Located to the south-east of the valley in the Ariège, the church is the village’s main building and landmark, built along the axis of the valley that shelters it.
Although the church is in fact in Caussou, it is also used by parishioners from Bestiac
Until 1691, the church was situated below where the current church stands, near the brook and the graveyard, but was destroyed by a flood and only a few religious artefacts and original stones remain.
The 1691 Romanesque steeple was integrated into the new church, built in 1830.
1746 : alterations to the steeple
1830 : building as it is today
The first mass was celebrated in the new church on 24/12/1830 by a priest named Dominique Durand.
At some point the cobbled pavement or “calade”, which consisted of a design made from little grey and white stones forming the inscription “pavete ad santrurium meum”, was covered over. Unfortunately it does not look as though the paving can be retrieved, as it is completely covered in cement. Decorative features such as painted arabesques, traces of which can be seen on the walls to either side of the gallery, seem to have disappeared also. There are still a few paintings in the chancel but they are in very poor condition.
25 years ago, the slate roof was replaced by a shingle roof, which has itself been replaced by slate once again.
In 1963 work was begun on the steeple to replace a floor which had been damaged by water. Concrete tanking was built, but this resulted in severe damage to the masonry and now needs to be attended to so as to restore the steeple to its former appearance and ensure its longevity.
The steeple is mainly made of tuff from local quarries which are easy to exploit. The bays are also framed with this rather fragile material, which has deteriorated significantly over the years. Next to be built was the nave, using a mixture of tuff, sandstone and granite hard-core, coated with a non-hydraulic lime render that has all but disappeared. The walls are punctuated with numerous putlog holes, making the masonry very fragile, particularly where the nave joins the chancel.
The stained glass windows are in very poor condition and the commune has agreed to finance their replacement.
The romanesque steeple is the oldest part of the church (1691). It is built mainly from tuff which has now significantly deteriorated. It has a few decorative elements, such as moulded window frames and little sculptures designating each level. The slate roof seems to be in good condition but this needs to be checked and there are gaps where the water runs off the furring strips.
The rectangular 19th century nave has a ceiling of groined vaults covered with plaster, in good condition. The inside facings have been completely covered with wooden cardboard sheeting, which does not let the masonry breathe.
The chancel continues in the form of an apse after the triumphal arch and this is where the masonry has suffered the most, with gaps and expanded putlog holes.
